In Need of a Pick-Me-Up?

Energy. It’s dwindling along with the daylight hours.  We all live such busy lives that sometimes it feels like we are just surviving more so than thriving.  Luckily there are quite a few things you can do (or not do) for the ever elusive (natural) energy boost.

I’m a big supporter of adding more in before taking stuff away, so I’ll list it out in that order.

First off, some simple things that will greatly increase your mental clarity, physical energy and overall mojo:

-Drink water.  (Real, pure water, NOT just some liquid).  Most of us are chronically dehydrated.  Before you reach for the coffee, soda, vitamin water or redbull, drink a glass of good old fashioned agua and see how you feel.

-Eat Dark Leafy Greens.  They are full of nutrients and great for improving circulation, mood, purifying the blood and strengthening the immune system.  Also green is associated with the spring time, a time of boundless energy, amiright?

-Switch to Gentle, Natural Sweets (like maple syrup, brown rice syrup, honey, green stevia, molasses, fresh fruits) and avoid processed sugar and chemicalized sweets which are basically toxic poison to your system.  They make your body work overtime to metabolize them–which takes up a LOT of energy

-Get More Sleep. Plain and simple.

-Take Time for Yourself.  Find those activities which nourish and revive you.  It could be chillin with friends, going to a movie, taking a walk, a bath, going to a museum, taking a class.  Doing things you love gives you purpose and purpose gives you energy.

-Evaluate the amount of animal food you’re consuming.  Eating too much or too little can lead to low energy.  So evaluate and experiment.  Note: your body and brain might be in opposition about this topic.

-Get in touch with your spiritual side.  After all, we are spiritual beings in a physical world.  And spirituality is so much bigger than religion.  It’s nature, dance, art.  Try taking a yoga class, meditating or spending some time in the great outdoors.

-Get in touch with your physical side.  Start slowly and build up.  Even if it’s a 10 minute walk every day.  The more you exercise, the more your body will crave it, and the more you work out the more energized you’ll feel.

Ok, and now what to nix…

I know it seems counter intuitive to most but honestly– caffeine is ZAPPING your energy.  The ups-and-downs of caffeine consumption lead to dehydration, blood sugar imbalance and major mood swings.  It is a short-term fix which is just feeding the addiction thereby making it harder to get to the highs, but the lows, they just get lower.

Sugar & Processed foods might give us a boost at first but they are actually depleting our bodies of vital minerals and nutrients.  They are ALSO highly addictive.

Stress, oh stress.  The most hardest thing to eliminate by far.  It’s ever-present in our world. You can start by making a list of your top 5 stressers and strategize some ways that you could decrease stress there or ask for help.  Is the stress worth it?  Is there a way out?  Are there changes you could make?  Is there anything you can do to change the situation?  If not, can you let go?

BOTTOM LINE: focus on foods with a vital life source.  Live foods will energetically give life force right back.  Whereas the quick fix always hurts way more in the long run.
